Bertolt Brecht was a German playwright and director who revolutionized theatre with his concept of Epic Theatre A. One of the key elements of Epic Theatre is the Alienation Effect (or Verfremdungseffekt) B. This technique aims to prevent the audience from becoming emotionally absorbed in the play, instead encouraging them to remain critical and detached observers C. By using methods like breaking the fourth wall, having actors step out of character, and using placards or projections, Brecht wanted the audience to think about the social and political issues being presented rather than just getting lost in the story B.
Compassion, on the other hand, is a bit more complex in Brecht’s works. While his plays often highlight social injustices and aim to inspire change, the alienation effect can sometimes create a distance that makes it harder for the audience to feel compassion for the characters. However, this distance is meant to foster a deeper understanding and critical awareness, which Brecht believed was necessary for real social change.
