The date line bends around some countries to avoid the confusion of having different dates in the same country. For example, if the date line was a straight line, then some parts of Russia and Alaska would have different dates than the rest of their countries. This would make it hard to coordinate activities, schedules, and events. By curving the date line, the whole country can have the same date and time zone. ¹²

The date line also bends to respect the wishes of some island nations that want to have the same date as their neighbors or trading partners. For example, in 2011, Samoa and Tokelau moved to the west of the date line to align their calendars with New Zealand and Australia. This was done to boost their economic and social ties with those countries. ³⁴

The date line is not a fixed or official boundary, but rather a convention that is followed by most countries and regions. Some places may choose to ignore the date line and use a different date or time zone that suits their needs. ⁵
