But the story behind the word is anything but simple.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It turns out that \u2018grub\u2019 entered the English language around 1400 as a verb meaning \u2018to dig.\u2019 Behind it is a common Germanic word with exactly that meaning. In the days of Old English, it would have been written as&nbsp;grybban.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word \u2018grave\u2019 comes from that same source, and for the same reason\u2014it involves digging. I seem to remember my later father-in-law, a farmer, talking about \u2018grubbing up weeds\u2019 from the paddock\u2014so that the verb \u2018to grub\u2019 (\u2018to dig\u2019) still exists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the way, when we call witchety grubs \u2018grubs\u2019 we are using the same word\u2014since they are found on, or under, the ground.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it has formed some compound nouns\u2014 \u2018grub stake\u2019 is an American expression for the amount of money a prospector will need to go out into the wilderness looking for gold (or whatever). And that compound means \u2018food money\u2019. The \u2018stake\u2019 part comes from gambling\u2014it means an amount you put at risk. And if you supply \u2018food money\u2019 to a prospector (the deal being you share in what he finds) and he then finds nothing, you\u2019ve lost your \u2018stake.\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was also \u2018grub street\u2019 which the great Samuel Johnson in his 1755 dictionary says, was the name of a street near Moorfields in London (now called Milton Street), \u2018much inhabited (says Johnson) by writers of small histories, dictionaries, and temporary poems.\u2019 It was inhabited, in other words, by hack writers who churned out their stuff to keep food on the table.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(This sort of writing was later called writing \u2018potboilers\u2019\u2014hack work designed to keep the pot on the stove boiling, and the writer fed.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But why was \u2018grub\u2019 (a word for digging) ever applied to food?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One suggestion is that\u2014as anyone with a vegetable garden will tell you\u2014a lot of our food is actually dug out of the ground. And that may be the source.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although I quite like the alternative suggestion\u2014that when we eat, we \u2018dig in\u2019 to our plate of food.
